MONTREAL -- Four days after the firebombing of a Montreal Jewish elementary school, police already were investigating one of the young men of Lebanese origin who were eventually charged with the arson, court documents show.

The information is outlined in two applications the Montreal police made before a justice of the peace two weeks ago to retain evidence officers had seized without a search warrant.

The object of the investigators' attention, 18-year-old Sleiman Elmerhebi, was arrested last Friday.

Mr. Elmerhebi and a friend, Simon Zogheib, also 18, were taken into custody and charged with arson and conspiracy.

Mr. Elmerhebi's 36-year-old mother, Rouba Elmerhebi Fahd, was also arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact.

After a day-long hearing, the mother was released yesterday on $20,000 bail. Quebec Court Judge Robert SansfaƧon will rule Tuesday on whether to release her son.

All three accused are Canadian citizens of Lebanese origin.
