the meetings of the Modern Language Association?
Not a single member expressed support for the war
I'm glad that Roger Simon and his wife email each other from within the same place; my husband and I do that too. Thank you to his wife Sheryl for pointing Simon to this Boston Globe report on what he calls the "monolithic point of view in academia, which should be the bastion of free expression."
Just a few years ago, he noted, the Taliban was regularly attacked at MLA meetings for their treatment of women and likened to the American religious right. Now, there is only talk of how the United States has taken away the rights of the Afghan people.
Read both the Boston Globe piece and Simon's commentary.
Been there, done that, can't believe it.
CAMPUS WATCH QUOTE OF THE MONTH
The Nutty Professor
via Fred Lapides at ISRAPUNDIT
"We don't need any more US buildings blown up because our government is coddling cuckoo [Israeli] settlers who are stealing other people's land to fulfill some weird religious power fantasy."
- Juan Cole, Professor of Modern Middle East and South Asian History at the History Department of the University of Michigan, referring to what the US still has to do in 2004 with regard to the War on Terror, January 2, 2004.
Charles Krauthammer: Why We Are Safer
"One of the attacks they don't bring up very often anymore is the Saddam Hussein thing, that it's not safer since Saddam Hussein's been captured -- because we now have 23 troops killed and we're having fighter planes escorting passenger jets through American airspace. I noticed that line of attack disappeared fairly quickly."Howard Dean may end up as a footnote in history, but he has already earned a place in the dictionary as the illustration accompanying the word smug. He claims that not only was he right that we are not safer with Saddam Hussein captured; not only has he already been vindicated by history, all 21 days of it; but he has been so obviously vindicated that his opponents, bowing to his superior wisdom, have stopped their attacks on this point.
-- Howard Dean, Newsweek, Jan. 12 issue
They have not. He has been peppered with questions about this statement, most recently during the Jan. 4 Iowa debate. How could he not? The idea that we are not safer (a) because we are still losing troops and (b) because al Qaeda has not been extinguished, amounts to an open-court confession of cluelessness on foreign policy.
The first is the equivalent of saying that we were not safer after D-Day because we were still losing troops in Europe. In war, a strategic turning point makes you safer because it hastens victory, hastens the ultimate elimination of the hostile power, hastens the return home of the troops. It does not mean there is an immediate cessation, or even a diminution, of casualties (see: Battle of the Bulge).
The other part of the statement -- we cannot be safer because we are still threatened by terrorism -- is even more telling. It rests on the wider notion, shared not just by Dean but by many Democrats, that so long as al Qaeda is active, we are never any safer. This rests on the remarkable assumption that we have a single enemy in the world, al Qaeda, and that it and it alone defines "safety."
It is hard to believe that serious people can have so absurdly narrow a vision of American national security. The fact is that we have other enemies in the world.

Bush vs Dean makes it plain: a guy who wants to take the war to the terrorists and the states who sponsor, harbour and train them versus a guy who thinks it’s about, if anything, liaising with Interpol and serving injunctions. From the IDF Spokesperson's Unit: On January 6, 2003, IDF forces arrested
Muntasar Abu Alayun, a senior operative of the Al Aqsa Brigades in Jenin. Muntasar was responsible for planning terrorist attacks and dispatching dozens of terrorists who carried out shooting attacks in the Jenin region [as well as] dozens of shooting attacks in June 2003, which killed at least three people.
IDF forces also arrested

New threat from Arafat, via Abu Ala: ONE STATE
Makes obvious that desire for their own state was bogus to begin with - they just want Israel, and have all along
JERUSALEM - The Palestinian premier said Thursday that if Israel unilaterally imposed a new boundary with Palestinian areas he would respond by pushing for a single Arab-Jewish state — a move that could spell disaster for Israel. It will be interesting to see what this does to liberal support in Europe and America for the "Palestinian cause." Won't everyone now have to reexamine exactly what the "Palestinian cause" IS?
A single country including Gaza, the West Bank and Israel would mean that the Jewish state would soon have an Arab majority. That would force Israel to choose between giving Palestinians the right to vote and risk losing the country's Jewish character, or becoming a minority-ruled country like apartheid South Africa.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon warned at the end of last year he would order unilateral separation from the Palestinian areas if peace talks do not show progress in the coming months.
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia told The Associated Press that such unilateral moves would make the drive for a Palestinian state a "meaningless slogan."
"If the situation continues as it is now we will go for the one-state solution," he said.
Qureia said the binational state idea is his own idea, not official policy, though he said Palestinians suggested it shortly after Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war.
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell immediately rejected the idea of a single state on Thursday, saying only a two-country solution to the violence would work.
For years, Israeli doves have cited the "demographic issue" in their calls for Israel to relinquish control of all or most of the West Bank and Gaza Strip as part of a peace treaty.
About 3.5 million Palestinians live in the West Bank and Gaza, in addition to 1.2 million Arab citizens of Israel. About 5.5 million Jews live in Israel.
The past decade of Israel-Palestinian peace efforts has always been based on a two-state solution. The latest peace plan — the U.S.-backed "road map" — leads to a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza by 2005. Abandoning that concept could throw Mideast politics into turmoil.
Sharon has said that if peace talks do not show progress in the coming months, he will order "unilateral disengagement." This would entail imposing a temporary boundary in the West Bank and removing some Jewish settlements from areas to be evacuated.
Sharon has said his plan is meant to improve Israel's security.
Palestinians charge that the plan amounts to Israel's taking over large chunks of the West Bank. Specifically, they point to the route of a separation barrier Israel is already building.
Its planned route would cut deep into the West Bank in several places to include some Jewish settlements on the "Israeli" side. Other Palestinian areas would be encircled by Israeli territory.
Powell, speaking in Washington, said a single country would not be viable.
"We're committed to a two-state solution," Powell said in Washington. "I believe that's the only solution that will work: a state for the Palestinian people called Palestine and a Jewish state, state of Israel, which exists."
Some Israeli analysts and politicians have said that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's goal has always been a single state eventually dominated by Palestinians.
Arafat has often declared that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would be decided by the higher Palestinian birth rate.
That shows "there is no real desire on the part of the Palestinians to create a state here and now," said Efraim Halevy, former head of the Mossad secret service.
However, Arafat has said repeatedly over the past decade that he is committed to the agreements his signed with Israel, leading to a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Adopting the demographic argument, Sharon this week told members of his hard-line Likud Party that any peace accord would require removal of some Jewish settlements in the West Bank and creation of a Palestinian state.
Polls show Sharon's proposals enjoy considerable support among Israelis.

An awful lot of caption for a pretty mediocre photo
Whose opinion is this, anyway?
Yeah right, "an enemy of Palestinian aspirations," one who has agreed to the possibility of yet another Arab terrorist state in his own back yard, in exchange for which the Arabs are doing and giving less than nothing, while still managing to make war on Israelis (an explosives lab was discovered in Ramallah yesterday afternoon, just a few miles north of Jerusalem).
Israeli Prime Minister participates in a vote on the 2004
annual budget Wednesday Jan. 7, 2004 in Jerusalem.
To his many critics, Sharon has not changed at all. He
remains an enemy of Palestinian aspirations who believes
in the use of force to hold onto his dream of a Greater
Israel and cow its enemies. But to many Israelis,
the premier has undergone a startling ideological
conversion, telling hawkish Likud members this week that
he will dismantle some of the settlements that he helped
nurture, and that Palestinians loathe, and pull back from
some of the West Bank and Gaza. (AP Photo/Oded Balilty)
Tough Stuff: A Voice from Hebron
"Pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides" by Gary M. Cooperburg
The state of Israel is the beginning of fulfillment of Biblical destiny. In spite of the fact that we have neither prophet nor king to lead us, and we are like children groping in the dark, events beyond our control have found us participating in a Divine process which few of us recognize or accept.Project Shofar is dedicated to spreading these truths wherever it is possible to do so. It is sounding the alarm, to Jew and Gentile alike, to open our eyes to the G-dly process that is presently underway, and work to support it. We dare not stand idly on the sidelines.
It is true that we have leaders who are oblivious to the dynamic reality of our unique role on this planet. In spite of the fact that these people have literally participated in so many very real miracles from the moment this state was established, they have chosen not to look at them. They have forced themselves to think that we have won impossible wars either because we had a brilliant army, or just a lot of good luck. It never would have occurred to them that G-d was at our side, and were He not we would not be here.
The fact that few would be willing to state is that the Jewish State can never be destroyed. There is no power on Earth which can do this. Had we a leadership that understood this fact we would not be suffering from terror today. Not only that, we would already have brought peace to the planet. Israel is not just another country. She is the key to redemption of all of Mankind. Until she accepts her Divine role terror will reign in this world.
It is unfortunate that we have a government which really thinks that it controls our destiny. From right to left all political factions have brilliant ideas by which they propose we can find true peace. All of them are totally wrong. We will never achieve peace via: a huge fence all around us; creating a new Arab state on Jewish soil; uprooting Jewish settlements; giving away parts of our homeland; "voluntary" transfer; or even getting the King of Jordan to change the name of his kingdom to Palestine.
The only peace plan that will work is a truly Jewish one. First and foremost Israel must redefine herself. She was reborn to be the Jewish State. This means that only Jews should have the right to be citizens here. Secondly, any non-Jew who claims sovereign rights to this land must be immediately expelled. And, last, but not least, any non-Jewish _expression of physical hostility against Jews should be met with a lethal response. There is no "due process" for terrorists, other than immediate execution. That means should an Arab as much as raise a hand against a Jew, he should be shot on the spot. The reason for this is that by attacking a Jew, he is attacking the Jewish G-d. This cannot be permitted to continue, as it is a desecration of our G-d.
We have gotten ourselves into a terrible mess. But that is no reason for us to throw up our hands and assume that we cannot clean it up. The President of the United States is not G-d. He cannot decree how the Jewish State should conduct itself. A true Jewish leader would politely inform the President that we are subject to a higher authority and have no choice in the matter of how we run our country. We have been commanded by G-d to return to and settle all of Eretz Yisrael. The commander-in-chief of the United States of America cannot countermand those commandments. On the contrary. It is in the interest of the United States of America to see to it that Israel obeys the commandments of G-d. By acting otherwise she is inviting Divine Wrath upon herself.
Most of our leaders have come to recognize that we cannot live in peace with our enemies. Even the most extreme leftists have suggested that we must separate from them. Yet almost the entire political spectrum sees only one way to accomplish this. . . by forcibly removing Jews from their homes and retreating into a smaller, more defensible state. It is totally "unthinkable" to these geniuses that perhaps it would be more sensible to forcibly remove our enemies from our homeland and move the combat line to our borders, rather than continue fighting our enemies in our towns and cities. They call such a concept "racism". Better to be nice to our enemies and allow them to continue to blow up our children on school buses than to be called "racists".
"And you shall do that which is right and good in the sight of the L-rd; that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land which the L-rd swore to your fathers; To cast out all your enemies from before you, as the L-rd has spoken" (Deuteronomy 6:18,19)
"When the L-rd your G-d shall bring you into the land which you are entering to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you; And when the L-rd your G-d shall deliver them before you; you shall strike them, and comp! letely destroy them; you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them. And you shall destroy all the people which the L-rd your G-d shall deliver you; your eye shall have no pity upon them; neither shall you serve their gods; for that will be a snare to you: If you shall say in your heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them; You shall not be afraid of them; but shall well remember what the L-rd your G-d did to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt" (Deuteronomy 7:1,2,16-18)
"And you shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and live in it; for I have given you the land to possess it: But if you will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those whom you allow to remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall harass you in the land where you live" (Numbers 33: 53,55)

Re: “IRAN: Objection is to Israel, not Jews” Letter 1/6/04
I disagree with Wolfe's opinion that Iran's refusal of Israeli aid was political or based on that government’s belief that Israel "illegally occupies Palestinian land." The facts do not support such a view, especially given that Iran did not exclude the possibility of Syria's assistance, even though Syria illegally occupies Lebanon.
If it were true that Iran's refusal was about "occupation," then why didn't Iran have diplomatic relations with Israel in the years 1948-67, when the West Bank and Gaza were not occupied by Israel, but by Jordan and Egypt? Why no relations with any Israeli government, even the "peace-making" administrations of Rabin or Barak?
Iran's refusal to accept Israeli aid in the aftermath of the earthquake has more to do with the ruling Shi'ai sect's great concern with the Islamic concepts of taharat/purity and nejasat/impurity. Hizbul Satan, i.e. non-Muslims, non-believers, infidels, etc. (as opposed to Hizbe Allah) have for centuries been -and continue to be- classified among the najess, the impure or unclean. Any contact with them or objects touched by them, requires ritual purification. Thus, Jews are in the same category as dogs and pigs, required by Shi'ai law to live in a segregated area and to stay indoors when it rains or snows (for fear these media might spread their impurities).
Jews have lived in Persia since the 6th century BCE. One would expect that over 26 centuries, tolerance for Jews might have grown. It is tragic for the victims of the earthquake that it has not. Iran was willing to accept aid from any country in the world except Israel. That's because among all the nations, Israel is the Jew. And the Jews are Israel.
There is simply no way that Iranian Shi'ai Muslim clergy could have handled the necessary ritual purification of all that medicine and food, all those blankets and shelters, that Israel wanted to send. Nor is there any way they would have allowed Jewish rescue workers to search for, and possibly touch, injured and buried Muslims.
Worse yet, it might have rained.
Iran's refusal to permit Israeli assistance at earthquake reflects Islamic law
According to a contemporary Iranian Muslim writer, "The Shi'ais demonstrated a far greater concern with the Islamic concepts of Taharat (purity) and Nejasat (impurity), and non-believers were classified among the impure or Najess, where any contact with them or objects touched by them, required the ritualistic act of purification.
Being classified as ritualistically impure, the jews were put in the same category as dogs and pigs which were considered as Najass, required to live in a segregated area, stay indoors at times of rain or snow, and not to touch any item for sale in a store unless it was promptly purchased. Such restrictions, to a lesser degree, were prevalent well into the 20th century and part of the religious teachings of Ayatallah Khomaini. . . "
The following, from The Jews of Islam by Bernard Lewis (Princeton University Press, 1984, pp. 181-183), attests to the historical entrenchment of such a view:
The Jewish traveler J.J. Benjamin, who traveled in Iran at mid-[19th] century, summarized the misfortunes of the Persian Jews under fifteen headings:The Muslim writer linked at the beginning of this post, born in Tehran and now living in Arizona, brought the following story to my attention, a story which continues to resonate:
1. Throughout Persia the Jews are obliged to live in a part of the town separated from the other inhabitants; but they are considered as unclean creatures, who bring contamination with their intercourse and presence.
2. They have no right to carry on trade in stuff goods.
3. Even in the streets of their own quarter of the town they are not allowed to keep any open shop. They may only sell their spices and drugs, or carry on the trade of a jeweller, in which they have attained great perfection.
4. Under the pretext of their being unclean, they are treated with the greatest severity, and should they enter a street, inhabited by Mussulmans [i.e. Muslims], they are pelted by the boys and mobs with stones and dirt.
5. For the same reason, they are forbidden to go out when it rains; for it is said the rain would wash dirt off them, which would sully the feet of the Mussulmans.
6. If a Jew is recognized as such in the streets, he is subjected to the greatest insults. The passersby spit in his face, and sometimes beat him on unmercifully, that he falls to the ground, and is obliged to be carried home.
7. If a Persian kills a Jew, and the family of the deceased can bring forward two Mussulmans as witnesses to the fact, the murderer is punished by a fine of 12 tumauns (600 piastres); but if two such witnesses cannot be produced, the crime remains unpunished, even though it has been publicly committed, and is well known.
8. The flesh of the animals slaughtered according to Hebrew custom, but as Trefe declared, must not be sold to any Mussulmans. The slaughterers are compelled to bury the meat, for even the Christians do not venture to buy it, fearing the mockery and insult of the Persians.
9. If a Jew enters a shop to buy anything, he is forbidden to inspect the goods, but must stand at a respectful distance and ask the price. Should his hand incautiously touch the goods, he must take them at any price the seller chooses to ask for them.
10. Sometimes the Persians intrude into the dwellings of the Jews and take possession of whatever pleases them, should the owner make the least opposition in defence of his property, he incurs the danger of atoning for it with his life.
11. Upon the least dispute between a Jew and a Persian, the former is immediately dragged before the Achund [religious authority], and, if the complainant can bring forward two witnesses, the Jew is condemned to pay a heavy fine. If he is too poor to pay this penalty in money, he must pay it in his person. He is stripped to the waist, bound to a stake, and receives forty blows with a stick. Should the sufferer utter the least cry of pain during this proceeding, the blows already given are not counted, and the punishment is begun afresh.
12. In the same manner the Jewish children, then they get into a quarrel with those of the Mussulmans, are immediately led before the Achund, and punished with blows.
13. A Jew who travels in Persia is taxed in every inn and every caravanserai he enters. If he hesitates to satisfy demands that may happen to be made on him, they fall upon him, and maltreat him until he yields to their terms.
14. If, as already mentioned, a Jew shows himself in the street during the three days of the Katel (feast of mourning for the death of the Persian founder of the religion of Ali) he is sure to be murdered.
15. Daily and hourly new suspicions are raised against the Jews, in order to obtain excuses for fresh extortions; the desire of gain is always the chief incitement to fanaticism.
19th century massacres and persecutions of Persian/Iranian Jews prompted many European Jews - by now enoying "far greater tolerance and better treatment than their co-religionists in the 'East' - to petition the Persian monarch, Naser-al-Din Shah, for protection and improved conditions for the Jews in Iran. Naser al-Din Shah received several petitions in the European capitals and in his 1873 memoirs provides this account of his conversation with the celebrated Rotheschild, the Jewish leader and capitalist:ironic, non?"He greatly advocated the cause of the Jews, mentioned the Jews of Persia, and claimed tranquillity for them. I said to him: ‘I have heard that you, brothers, possess a thousand crores of money. I consider the best thing to do would be that you should pay fifty crores to some large or small State, and buy a territory in which you could collect all the Jews of the whole world, you becoming their chiefs, and leading them on their way to peace, so that you should no longer be thus scattered and dispersed." We laughed heartily, and he made no reply. I gave him an assurance that I do protect every alien nationality that is in Persia"
[from J.W. Redhouse, The Diary of H.M. the Shah of Persia, London, 1874, reprinted by Mazda, 1995, p. 237].

THANK YOU to the Houston Chronicle for this editorial
Hitler has no place in U.S. political discourse
Still early in the presidential election season, there's already been much talk about the anger many Democrats feel toward President Bush and his policies. And Amen.
Some of it apparently spilled over into an anti-Bush ad comparing Bush to Hitler. The liberal activist group Move-On.org had posted the ad and others on its Web site.
The comparison is totally inappropriate and has no place in the political discourse of the nation. It is beyond the pale.
Two 30-second spots were among more than 1,500 entries in a contest to find one ad that "tells the truth about George Bush's policies." One of the two offensive ads reportedly showed Bush morphing into Hitler. The other was illustrated with film of parading Nazis.
"This is the worst and most vile form of political hate speech," Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie said, calling for an apology.
Eli Pariser, campaign director for MoveOn.org, told The Associated Press that the ads appeared on the Web site with hundreds of others submitted by the public and voted on during a two-week period. They were removed Dec. 31, when the voting period ended.
A statement by Wes Boyd,MoveOn.org's founder said: "None of these was our ad, nor did their appearance constitute endorsement or sponsorship by MoveOn.org Voter Fund. They will not appear on TV. We do not support the sentiment expressed in the two Hitler submissions. They were voted down by our members and the public, who reviewed the ads and submitted nearly 3 million critiques in the process of choosing the 15 finalist entries. ... We agree that the two ads in question were in poor taste and deeply regret that they slipped through our screening process. In the future, if we publish or broadcast raw material, we will create a more effective filtering system."
OK, but the larger point of this affair was made by Martin Cominsky, director of the Southwest Region of the Anti-Defamation League in Houston, who says no matter what one thinks of the president, it's an absurd and dangerous comparison.
"It serves to diminish the suffering of the victims of the Holocaust," said Cominsky. "There's no way you can compare anything Bush has done with a calculated plan to slaughter 6 million Jews. ... At some point it just cheapens the level of political discourse. People begin to be desensitized to the pain and anguish of the Holocaust."
· The 15 finalists in the anti-Bush ad campaign and a statement on the issue can be viewed at MoveOn.org
· Chairman Ed Gillespie's statement on the ad campaign is posted at theRepublican National Committee website.

The Democratic field: a Jew, a half-Jew, a quarter-Jew and an almost-Jew.
Is that good for the Jews?
by Julia Gorin, from today's Wall Street Journal Online editorial:
The race is on. Not for the presidency, but for the Jewish presidency, and the Jewish vote. Joe Lieberman aside, we recently heard that Wesley Clark whispered to a supporter concerned about his stance on Israel, "Did you know my father was Jewish?" Not to be outdone, within days Democratic front-runner Howard Dean made sure we all found out about his devout Jewish wife and Jewish kids. John Kerry, however, had almost a year on either of them, because he found out back in February that his paternal grandfather was Jewish and his grandmother had "Jewish roots."
But perhaps they are all just following the lead of Hillary Clinton, who in 2000 got a boost to the Senate after the Forward, a Jewish newspaper, reported on her Jewish step-grandmother.
"That's the big thing this season, Jewish ancestry," Mr. Clark said recently . . .
I always thought it was too obvious to spell out, but apparently it isn't: A Jew in the White House would not be good for the Jews. Because the tendency of Jews in power is to bend over backwards to prove evenhandedness--an opportunity that most often presents itself in the context of the Middle East. It becomes the Jewish politician's complex to prove that a Jew is capable of governing without favoring the "Jewish side"--the first result of which is an unobjectively paranoid policy that sells Israel down the river.
We saw it in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War, when Henry Kissinger advised President Nixon against a massive arms airlift to Israel (advice Nixon declined). We saw it again under the Clinton administration, which included half-Jewish Defense Secretary William Cohen, as well as Jewish National Security Adviser Sandy Berger and once-Jewish Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
It was the policy of this guilt-ridden group to forge ahead with the peace process "no matter what"--a euphemism for making only the Israeli side accountable for its concessions in the Oslo agreement, regardless of how many Jewish corpses such an approach produced.
This, after Candidate Clinton in 1992 offered the following story in answer to how he would handle Israel: He was at yet another deathbed, this time of a dying Baptist minister, who supposedly made Clinton promise that whatever he did, he was not to let Israel down. The Jews ate it up; the story didn't even have to be true.
Today, the very fact that the Jewish-ish contenders have chosen the Democratic Party within which to realize their ambitions --a party where anti-Semitism is troublingly common and includes pandering to anti-Jewish Arab-American groups-- is telling. . .
What we have in Election 2004 are a full Jew, a half-Jew, a quarter-Jew and an almost-Jew (Messrs. Lieberman, Clark, Kerry and Dean, to recap). These candidates sound like Russians trying to cough up a Jewish gene so they can immigrate to Israel. . .
So now it's up to Al Sharpton and Carol Moseley Braun to reveal their Jewish roots. In this day and age, it wouldn't be such a stretch. Recall that in 2002 Bill Clinton told a Jewish group in Toronto that if Israel were invaded, "I would personally grab a rifle, get in a ditch, and fight and die." So not only was he the first black president; he was also the first Jewish president.
Sorry, folks, we already had a Jew in the White House. And it brought us intifada II.
Palestinian Authority freezes bank accounts of "human rights" group
Leading Palestinian NGO accused of embezzling millions
from the News Page at International Christian Embassy Jerusalem via Isralert:
Officials and employees of leading Palestinian human rights group LAW stand accused of siphoning several million dollars in international donations into secret bank accounts, and using other funds to furnish lavish lifestyles, and to finance private commercial transactions.
Following a criminal complaint lodged with the Palestinian Authority by major European donors including Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Ireland, the PA has seized the bank accounts of several Jerusalem-based officials suspected of orchestrating the scam.
Among them is Khader Shkirat, the outspoken former head of LAW, the Palestinian Society for the Protection of Human Rights and the Environment. Shikirat has been summoned to Ramallah for questioning over his use of some $10 million from philanthropic sources during the funding-rich Oslo years having been named in the complaint alongside 26 other employees.
The action comes after an audit report commissioned by the European donors found that some $2.35 million of their donations had been transferred to secret bank accounts and that Shkirat ran the organization as a private business. Among the long list of financial improprieties is Shkirat’s alleged use of $490,000 from LAW funds to conduct personal transactions among friends, accountants and senior staff and to acquire ownership in the Arab Phones Company, The Post reports.
Judt: "Even if I felt threatened as a Jew, I would never want to go to Israel"
His Belgian father descended from a line of Lithuanian rabbis
Nathaniel Popper interviewed Tony Judt for The Forward:
Born in 1948, the same year that Israel came into existence, Tony Judt was raised in the heavily Jewish East End section of London by a mother whose parents had immigrated from Russia and a Belgian father who descended from a line of Lithuanian rabbis. . .
Judt is a scholar who was until recently best known for his writings on European history. But then, in a 2,900-word essay in the October 23 edition of The New York Review of Books, Judt dropped the intellectual equivalent of a nuclear bomb on Zionism, calling for the dismantling of Israel as a Jewish state . . .
In the first weeks after his essay was published, Judt and The New York Review received more than 1,000 letters, many peppered with terms like "antisemite" and "self-hating Jew," and some going so far as to threaten the scholar and his family. Judt was removed from the masthead of The New Republic, where he had been listed as a contributing editor, and condemned by the magazine's literary editor, Leon Wieseltier, and other pro-Israel commentators. . .
Judt seemed remarkably unperturbed by the deeply critical response to his essay from American Jews, a reflection that appears to stem in part from his rather dim opinion of the Jewish community. "It is such an insecure community," Judt said, "so desperate to find some basis for its own identity". . .
The scholar said that he does not identify with Israel or the American Jewish community, and acknowledged that this partially explains his lack of attachment to the Zionist state. . . "Even if I felt threatened as a Jew," Judt told the Forward, "I would never want to go to Israel."
Still, Judt said, he considers himself a "proud Jew."
WJC/Bronfman accuses EU of encouraging antisemitism
In response, European Commission suspends plans for joint seminar with Jewish organizations
What a mess. Apparently, Edgar Bronfman, president of the World Jewish Congress, wrote an article that appeared Monday in the Financial Times. I can't access it without paying for a subscription, so must rely on coverage such as this at Haaretz:
In the article, Bronfman said that the European Union was guilty of anti-Semitism both by action and inaction. Bronfman said that the EU was hiding the fact that most of the world's violent anti-Semitic acts occuring outside Israel took place in Western Europe, an action that "reeked of intellectual dishonesty and moral treachery."Then on Tuesday, European Commission President Roman Prodi demanded that the accusations of antisemitism be retracted, and suspended a joint seminar of European representatives and Jewish organizations.
Bronfman also wrote that the EU "first released a flawed and dangerously inflammatory poll which purported to name Israel the greatest threat to world peace. Then it canceled a study commissioned by its own monitoring center that reported on the involvement of Muslim minorities in incidents of mounting European anti-Semitism."
"Let us not mince words," Bronfman continued. "Both of these actions were politically motivated, demonstrating a failure of real decency. The Talmud teaches that silence implies agreement, and that is why we will not rest until every European parliamentarian, member state, and intergovernmental body has a copy of this report in their hands."
"Democracies are not judged by how they treat current or future majorities," Bronfman asserted, "but by how they treat their minorities."
Now it's Wednesday, and Prodi has just reinstated the conference.
So, what's interesting about all this? What's sickly fascinating to my mind is the way in which much of the media blamed all this mishegoss on Bronfman's charges of antisemitism, not on the antisemitism itself:
Haaretz: "WJC barb freezes anti-Semitism seminar"
The Times (UK): "Anti-Semitism charge sparks summit collapse"
South African News: "Jewish attacks on EC spark controversy"
Desecration of historic Jewish cemetery in Serbia "catastrophic"
Ivan Ceresnjesan was president of the Jewish community in Sarajevo during the Bosnian war of 1992-5. An architect, he now works for the Center for Jewish Art at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In this article from The Forward, he describes a 17th century Jewish cemetery in the city of Nis:
". . . used as a garbage dump, polluted by locally produced industrial waste, and in which gravestones had been dug up and used by local Roma, or Gypsies, for the repair of their houses and as household objects. A Roma family had moved into the prayer room at the site, and commenced to use the sarcophagus of a local rabbi, Rahamim Naftalija Gedalia, as a patio table and laundry-drying stand . . . a pigsty now sits in one part of the cemetery, [and, says Ceresnjesan,] 'most shattering of all, I found newly dug up graves and witnessed that the bones of the Jewish martyrs were scattered in mud and human waste.... ' "The World Jewish Congress offers background on Jewish communities in Serbia.

ZOA Urges Sharon to Begin Dismantling Illegal Palestinian Arab Outposts
NEW YORK - Just as Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has said that because Israel is governed by the rule of law, he will dismantle Jewish "outposts" in Judea-Samaria, the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) is urging him to dismantle the much more numerous illegal Palestinian Arab outposts and settlements in those territories and in eastern Jerusalem.JOIN the Zionist Organization of America, or sign up for their Action E-list.
The Israeli government has previously estimated that Arabs are building at ten times the rate of Jews in Judea-Samaria.
ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said: "To tear down Jewish buildings, yet leave intact the much larger number of illegal Palestinian Arab buildings and homes, suggests a deplorable double standard."
A recent poll carried out by John McLaughlin & Associates among a scientific sample of 1,000 American adults found:
* 61% Say Jewish Construction in Territories Should be Permitted: Asked if both Jews and Arabs should be allowed to build in the territories, as they do now, or if Jews should be prevented from building there (as the Road Map proposes), 61.5% said both Jews and Arabs should be allowed to build; only 13.5% said that only Arabs should be allowed.
* 63% Say Jews Should Be Allowed to Live in Territories: Asked if both Jews and Arabs should be allowed to live in the territories, as they do now, or if only Arabs should be allowed to live there, 63.3% said both Jews and Arabs should be allowed; only 9% said that only Arabs should be allowed.
* Only 10% Say "Settlements" Are Main Obstacle to Peace: Asked what is the "main obstacle to peace between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs" and given four choices --the ongoing Arab violence; Palestinian Arab non-recognition of Israel; Israel's anti-terror tactics; and the existence of Jewish communities in the territories -- only 10% blamed the Jewish communities as the main obstacle to peace.
* 64% Oppose Expelling Jews from the Territories: Asked if Jewish residents of the territories should be expelled (as the Palestinian Authority and the Road Map propose), 64.1% said they "disagree" or "strongly disagree" with expulsion. Only 16.5% "somewhat agree" or "strongly agree" with the idea of expelling them.
* Almost 2-1 Say Jews Have Strongest Historical Claim to Land: Asked whether the Jews or the Arabs have "the strongest historical claim" to Judea-Samaria and Gaza, 31.1% said the Jews; only 18.8% said the Arabs (the remainder were undecided or declined to answer).

Joe's letter "mixes up Jews with the Israeli government"
in today's Daily Camera
IRAN: Objection is to Israel, not JewsJoe, you silly infidel, how could you get so mixed up? Iran is just protesting the policies of this particular government of Israel. I'm sure they were very open and friendly to, say, the Rabin government. Weren't they?
Joe Madalia's Jan. 3 Open Forum letter, "Hating Jews More Vital than Aid?", is an example of yet another Westerner who doesn't seek to really understand the underlying political realities of the Middle East, Israel and Iran.
Simply put, the Iranian government believes that the Israeli government illegally occupies Palestinian land. Even the U.S. government is increasing pressure on Israel to leave Palestinian territories. Mr. Madalia's letter mixes up Jews with the Israeli government. There are many Jews within and outside Israel who disagree with their government's policies. Iran has not rejected aid from people of Jewish faith — it has rejected Israeli government presence within what it considers to be Palestinian borders.
As a Muslim woman and Iranian-American, I am first and foremost a human being, and I extend my gratitude to all who have offered to help the earthquake victims and hope that we can move toward greater understanding and peace in this coming year. To help earthquake victims, please visit the International Red Cross website at www.ifrc.org/helpnow/donate/donate_iran.asp.
UPDATE, hot off the presses:Whether or not the Camera publishes Joe's (excellent) rebuttal, given its policy of allowing only one letter per person per month, others should step up and help out. Now's the time.
I appreciate Ms. Wolfe's response to my concerns about the Iranian government's refusing aid from Israel during the dreadful earthquake disaster in Iran. Since the government of Iran is so concerned about "occupation", why did it not formally announce rejection of help from Syria which illegally occupies and controls its neighbor Lebanon. Of course to my knowledge, Syria has not offered help anyway. It sometimes takes "another Westerner" who does know the realities of the Middle East extremely well to cut through uncalled for hatred on the part of the government of Iran. When your people are suffering, this is no time to let politics get in the way. Preserving life as the highest priority is indeed a "Western" value, and one that the Iranian government should learn.
And the winner is . . . . Reflecting Absence
by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker
Note: The renderings, animations and descriptions do not reflect significant changes made to the design, which will be unveiled next week.
This design proposes a space that resonates with the feelings of loss and absence that were generated by the death and destruction at the World Trade Center. A pair of reflective pools marks the location of the towers' footprints. The surface of these pools is broken by large voids. These voids can be read as containers of loss, being close-by yet inaccessible.
The pools are submerged thirty feet below street level in the middle of a large open plaza. They too are large voids, open and visible reminders of the absence. The pools are fed by a constant stream of water, cascading down the walls which enclose them. Bordering each pool is a pair of sloped buildings. These buildings create a sense of enclosure, capturing the exposed outer corners of the memorial site and defining a path of circulation around each pool. They also guide visitors to the site into the memorial itself.
Visitors begin their descent into the memorial by entering one of these buildings. This descent removes them from the sights and sounds of the city and immerses them in a cool darkness. As they gradually proceed, step by step, the sound of water falling grows louder, and more daylight filters in from below. At the bottom of their descent, they find themselves behind a thin curtain of water, staring out at an enormous pool that flows endlessly towards a central void that remains empty. A ribbon of names surrounds this pool and the enormity of this space and the multitude of names lining it underscore the vast scope of the tragedy that took place at this site. Standing there at the water's edge, looking at a pool of water that is flowing away into an abyss, a visitor to the site can sense that what is beyond this curtain of water and ribbon of names is inaccessible.

Why is it that people are proposing a Middle East peace plan that will make Judea and Samaria Judenrein (the Nazi term for a place with no Jews)?
It is the historic homeland and birthplace of the Jewish people, yet many world leaders believe the removal of Jewish communities from Judea and Samaria is a crucial prerequisite for a peaceful resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Jews have lived in Judea and Samaria for thousands of years. In fact, the Jewish religion and people were birthed in Hebron. We know of the ancient Jewish presence there from both the Hebrew and Christian Bibles and from abundant archaeological and documentary evidence.
No one denies that the oldest document showing the historical connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel, including Judea and Samaria (a.k.a. the West Bank), is the Bible. Genesis 24:18 says: “And Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the terebinths of Mamre, which are in Hebron.” And the world's oldest documentation of real estate being purchased for full price is also in the Bible (see Genesis 23:9). And for those who doubt biblical references, there is substantial evidence in archaeological findings.
Historically, the Jewish homeland included what is today called Judea and Samaria, the Golan Heights, and a considerable part of today's Jordan. The land was inhabited mainly by Jews and was ruled by Jews. Therefore, Lord Robert Cecil, former acting British foreign secretary, was right to use the name "Judea" for the whole land in his famous remark: "Our wish is that Arabian countries shall be for the Arabs, Armenia for the Armenians, and Judea for the Jews" (December 2, 1917).
The Jewish presence there has been continuous, except for 19 years from 1948 to 1967 when the area became Judenrein. And during that 19 year period, the Jordanians and Arabs of the remaining portion of "Palestine" desecrated Jewish holy sites and cemeteries in an attempt to deny that the Jews ever lived there.
Those who advocate the dismantling of the Jewish communities in this territory are advocating a policy of ethnic cleansing. This may sound extreme, but from the early 1900s, the Arabs carried out a policy of ethnic cleansing that included the massacre and pogroms in 1929 and 1936 in Hebron. Both the spirit and practice of ethnic cleansing are being continued in the current conflict.
So, what did UN Secretary-General Kofi Anan mean in his 2001 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech when he said, “A genocide begins with the killing of one man — not for what he has done, but because of who he is. A campaign of 'ethnic cleansing' begins with one neighbor turning on another.”
Does this not also apply to the Israeli Jews who have re-established homes in Judea and Samaria? Should they be ethnically cleansed from the heart of their historical homeland? Does the Nobel recipient not know a real victim of ethnic cleansing when he sees one?
The same people and countries that condemned ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, Cyprus, Rwanda and Tibet totally reverse themselves when it comes to the right of Jewish people to live in the lands of their historic patrimony. If Chinese people were forbidden to live in China, Buddhists barred from Tibet, or Irish-Catholics banned from South Boston, there would be a tremendous outcry against such injustices. But where is the outcry against the removal of Jews from Judea — their historical homeland?
Is there any other nation on earth that has such a legitimate birth certificate as Israel? And if the Jews have no such document, then the Old and New Testaments are worthless.
The war for Israel's independence ended in 1949 with the Jordanians in full control of Judea and Samaria and the Old City of Jerusalem (the "West Bank"), cutting the Jewish people off from their most holy religious sites. The official status of these areas, then, was disputed territories, as no one had held sovereignty there since the defeat of the Ottoman Empire. Only two countries, Pakistan and Britain, recognized the 19-year Jordanian "illegal occupation." Even the entire Arab world refused to recognize it and, consequently, it was illegal and illegitimate ab initio.
After the 1967 war, the Jewish people have simply been returning to the land from which they were forcibly expelled during the first Arab-Israeli war of 1948-49.
This territory has always been known as Judea and Samaria. Do the names "Jew" (for Judea) and "Samaritan" (as in "good Samaritan") sound familiar? In fact, Shemer, founder of Asher, a clan of one of the twelve tribes of Israel, was the owner and eponym of the hills of Samaria. Is there anything Arab or "Palestinian" about either? Even UN Resolution 181, the Partition Plan of 1947, refers to these territories as Judea and Samaria.

Which side (of the fence) are you on?
"The army will not allow anyone to harm the fence or cross it"
JPost: A senior IDF officer warned on Tuesday that soldiers may be forced to shoot live bullets again at demonstrators seeking to harm the security fence.
"If they have no choice, soldiers may be forced to shoot using live bullets at those seeking to damage the fence," the officer said.
The officer noted that recent Palestinian media reports mentioned the growing cooperation between locals and protest groups affiliated with the Left planning to step up protests at the security fence.
The army will not allow anyone to harm the fence or cross it the officer said, noting that the erection of the fence cost millions of dollars of the taxpayers money and signs posted in three languages posted near the fence warn residents.
His statements came less then a day after the army published the findings of an investigation launched by the OC Central Command to examine the circumstances that led to the shooting and subsequent wounding of Gil Na'amati ten days ago in a demonstration near Mas'ha where protesters attempted to tear the fence down.
Describing the current situation as problematic, the senior officer said "as far as I am concerned we are not talking about a protest, but violent clashes intent on harming the fence."
"There were no attempts to acquire the necessary permission to hold the protest and there were no attempts to identify themselves as Israelis. There was one sign written in Hebrew, but it was one among slogans and PLO and PFLP flags," the senior officer said.
The officer noted that a day before the protest, the suicide bomber who perpetrated the attack at the Geha intersection set out from the area where the protest occurred. Two days after the protest, two terrorists en route to perpetrate an attack were caught by security forces in the same area.
Details of the investigation released shortly before midnight Monday found no fault with the soldiers' behavior and treatment of the incident and that they and their commanders acted in accordance to the open fire regulations applicable in areas near the security fence.

BANAGOR DOES IT AGAIN
Fear and Stupidity on the Left a Must-Read
It really comes down to belief: either you believe the terrorists, or you don't. When I read in the Muslim papers, every day mind you, that they want to kill all the Jews, destroy America, destroy Israel, destroy Christians everywhere, and turn the world into a Muslim Caliphate, well: I believe it.
What do you believe?
Perhaps you are one of those who believes that "Kill the Jews" and "Destroy America" is some sort of quaint colloquial form of saying "Please pass the bread and salt" at the table? Perhaps you are one of those who thinks that "not all Muslims believe that", and that is probably so. But even if only ten percent of the Muslim world believes it, that is still one hundred million enemies to deal with. That is more than the German army ever had on the ground. Bush didn't create those words; the terrorists did.
What do you believe?
Perhaps that Bush did create this atmosphere of hatred, stretching even so far back as the middle ages when Islam was bent on destroying the West, as it is still today? I say Islam when naturally, I mean fundamentalist Islam. Even "moderate" Muslims are stating these things, and Bush didn't create their words for them either. He doesn't speak Arabic and he doesn't often give remarks in mosques around the world. Naturally the Left would as soon as not believe that in fact he planted all those mullahs screeching for our blood, and the stupid Leftist followers would have you believe that this is plausible because anything is possible, which makes everything true.
READ IT ALL
Who would've thunk it necessary to point out that not everything is true? But you rose to that occasion; you're the best.
p.s. I'm so glad you're off that hippie-hunting jag; this is much more worthy of your good broadsword.

Letter from Israel
About four years ago, I had a lecture in Haifa. Now, I don't drive (long story) and so they sent a driver to take me and bring me back. It's about a two hour drive each way, so you get to talking.
My driver was a young Israeli, a handsome man with dark hair. We exchanged pleasantries on the way there, but on the way back, he suddenly turned to me and said: "You know, looking at me, you would never be able to tell that I'm Job."
I looked at him, astonished. And then he told me truly one of the most heartbreaking and incredible stories I've ever heard.
When his first son was born he didn't start walking until he was eighteen months. He was a cute little fellow, so they weren't worried, not really. But then other things started to go wrong. His growth was very slow, for example. But doctors were stumped. It was only years later that a visiting American doctor gave the parents the shocking diagnosis: The child had the rarest of genetic diseases. Progeria. The rapid aging disease, in which a child becomes an old man almost over night. Only 140 children in the world have this disease.
How terrible, I thought. To watch your beautiful little boy lose his teeth, his hair, his hearing, his sight...To watch him age and die with no way to help him.
But the story didn't end there. They asked the doctors if their other children would be all right. No problem, the doctors said. This is a hundred million to one chance....Their second son, Aaron, was born also born with progeria.
Two children out of 140 in the world. And in one Israeli family.
He lowered his voice. "We had a daughter after that. She was perfectly fine. When but when she was nine years old, she was killed in a car accident in front of the house."
I looked at this man. Job, he called himself. Yet, he wore a skullcap. He told me of his faith in God. He told me of his love for his wife. He told me how he was struggling to care for his sons. No one understood what he was going through. Children who at 14 are losing all their teeth, and need thousands of dollars in dental care. Children who need hearing aids and nurses and walkers and constant care. Do you need money? I asked him. For, that was the very least anyone could do to help.
He shook his head. " I don't want charity. They wanted me to go on television, but I don't want my children turned into a freak show. I don't want pity. This is what God has given me to deal with, and with His help, I will deal with it."
For years afterwards, I said a prayer for this man every time I lit Sabbath candles. I prayed that God would give him enough money to care for his family without outside help. About a year ago, I called him because I needed a ride to the airport, and he came to get me with his wife in the car. Meeting her was incredible. I asked him how he was doing. And he said thank God.
Two weeks ago, I got an unexpected fax from him inviting me to his son's bar Mitzvah. He had just lost his first son who had died at the age of 23. The family got up from shiva and went to celebrate their other son's coming of age. Would I come, please?
Of course, I did. And I will never forget it. I watched this mother, this lovely young woman who has been through more pain than most of us can even imagine, get up and tell the well-wishers, the families of other handicapped children, that every hour, every day, every minute with a beloved child is a gift, that should not be taken for granted. She hugged Aaron, who already half-blind and nearly deaf, joined the band by playing the drums with an enormous smile.
It was only after the party that I learned that this wonderful, incredible family is about to lose their home which is going to have to be sold to pay the accumulation of the enormous medical expenses that it took to care for these boys all these years. The government health fund and social service agencies absolutely failed them because there are just no rules for a family in which children need dental care that cost upwards of ten thousand dollars...Or hearing aids every few months. Or full time nannies. The banks have turned them down for an extension on their mortgage. They don't even have the money to pay all the funeral expenses...
All the years of going it alone has finally left this proud, wonderful, hardworking man at the end of his tether.
I really don't want these people to lose their home. I really want them to have the money they need to care for this child for the few years he has left on this earth. I really want to shake up the entire planet and say: Look at this!! Look how these people have been struggling all by themselves, this Israeli family, quietly, anonymously. There never was a more deserving case on the planet.
I've asked someone at Hadassah to see what can be done about forgiving these huge dental bills...(If you have influence at Hadassah, can you let people know about this family?) And I am working with the wonderful organization that has been caring for Aaron all these years, Shalva, to set up a special fund for Aaron and his family. I am asking, annoying, writing, calling, begging everyone I know to help them, please, just help them. While they still have their faith. They still have their hope. They still have their home. It's enough they've said kaddish for two children, and must watch a third turn into an old man over night... Why should they have to worry about money day and night as well?
If you can possibly help bring some light into their lives please go to Shalva's website using this link. It's a long page, with alot of information. In the list of donations, just check "other" and fill in Aaron's name with whatever amount you can. Please make sure you say the donation is for Aaron. Also, if you have any connections with Hadassah, please try to alert them to the needs of this very special family.
I love you all. And one day, I'm going to write a book about these people. They have so much to teach the rest of us about love, and faith, and patience and acceptance and wisdom.
Is Sharon Declaring War on Yesha?
Arutz Sheva: Defense Ministry officials have instructed the IDF to verify the legality of many Yesha (Judea, Samaria & Gaza) communities, apparently increasing efforts to uproot yishuvim in addition to the “unauthorized outposts”.See also Cabinet Decision Bends Before American Dictates and Government Prepares to Uproot 28 More Outposts
The first two names to appear on the list are Neguhot, a small community in the Hevron Hills, and Palgei Mayim, a neighborhood in the Shomron community of Eli, located in the Gush Shilo area of the Benjamin Regional Council district.
Neguhot began in 1982 as an army Nahal outpost while Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was serving as defense minister. In 1998, Sharon in his capacity as national infrastructure minister converted it into a civilian community.
The Palgei Mayim neighborhood of Eli began as an unauthorized outpost that was removed by the army. Repeated attempts to resettle the hill were eventually successful and last year, ten permanent homes were constructed in the area with funding from government agencies, alongside over 20 caravans. There are over 30 families living in the neighborhood of Eli, now about 500 families.
The IDF’s Civil Administration has also been instructed to verify the legal status of Givat Salit, a ten caravan community in the Jordan Valley region, as well as Tekoa Daled, in the eastern Gush Etzion district.
Deputy Defense Minister Ze’ev Boim confirmed that the army has been instructed to verify the legality of many communities, varying in size and age, but he was unwilling to list names.

Syria hiding Iraqi WMD
Boker tov, Boulder: Bush was right. You were wrong.
WorldNetDaily reports that relatives of President Assad of Syria smuggled Iraqi arms to 3 places:
A relative of Syrian President Bashar Assad is hiding Iraqi weapons of mass destruction in three locations in Syria, according to intelligence sources cited by an exiled opposition party.
The weapons were smuggled in large wooden crates and barrels by Zu Alhema al-Shaleesh, known for moving arms into Iraq in violation of U.N. resolutions and for sending recruits to fight coalition forces, said the U.S.-based Reform Party of Syria.
The party, based in Potomac, Md., regards itself as a secular body comprised of Syrians who want to see the country embrace "real democratic and economic reforms."
One weapons-cache location identified by the sources is a mountain tunnel near the village of al-Baidah in northwest Syria, the report said. The tunnel is known to house a branch of the Assad regime's national security apparatus.
Two other arms supplies are reported to be in west-central Syria. One is hidden at a factory operated by the Syrian Air Force, near the village of Tal Snan, between the cities of Hama and Salmiyeh. The third location is tunnels beneath the small town of Shinshar, which belongs to the 661 battalion of the Syrian Air Force.
The nephew of Zu Alhema al-Shaleesh, Assef al-Shaleesh, runs Al Bashair Trading Co., a front for the Assad family involved prior to the war in oil smuggling from Iraq and arms smuggling into the country. Al-Bashair has offices in Damascus, Beirut and Baghdad.
In an exclusive interview yesterday with the London Telegraph, Assad came close to admitting his country possessed stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction.
Assad told the London paper Syria rejects American and British demands for concessions on weapons of mass destruction, insisting Damascus is entitled to defend itself by acquiring its own chemical and biological deterrent.
He said Israel must agree to abandon its undeclared nuclear arsenal in order for Syria to consider any deal with the U.S.
Last week, the Los Angeles Times reported Al Bashair Trading Co. participated in the smuggling of millions of dollars worth of sophisticated arms and equipment to Saddam Hussein for three years prior to the Iraqi leader's overthrow.
Al Bashair executives met with North Korean firms before the war began, according to the Los Angeles daily. The paper's three-month investigation included the translation of 800 signed contracts found in the Al Bashair Trading Co. office shortly before U.S. troops entered Baghdad.
Just prior to the U.S.-led effort to oust Hussein, SES International Corp. signed at least 50 contracts to supply weapons and gear to Iraq, the Times said, including 1,000 heavy machine guns and up to 20 million bullets for assault rifles.
Not all the weapons were delivered, but some may still be in use by terrorists battling the U.S. occupation forces, the newspaper said.
At least one shipment of arms was completed with the help of the Syrian government in violation of a U.N. arms embargo.
SES International Corp. denied any wrongdoing, while Syria's foreign ministry refused to comment to the Times.
This is too much
Jooooos attending a political conference are militants? Are, by definition, "engaged in warfare"?

5,000 Suicide bombers waiting to act
by Gal Berger, NewsFirstClass (Hebrew)
The head of the Al Aqsa Brigades in Gaza, Abu Kasi, told the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq al-Awsat Tuesday that the brigades have more than 5,000 suicide bombers in the territories prepared to act at any moment, and that they see Yasser Arafat as their sole leader. Abu Kasi confirmed that IDF actions had affected the brigades' infrastructure, as he admitted losses of 300 killed and nearly 100 captured.

Palestinians refuse millions of dollars in aid
- rather than pledge not to use the money for terrorism
"We would like to take funds from them, but without any conditions"
AP: RAMALLAH,That's got to be the QUOTE OF THE DAY, THE MONTH, MAYBE EVEN THE YEAR: "Any activity could be identified as a terrorist activity." Yeah, right, not just blowing up babies, but feeding babies and loving them and keeping them safe . . . these could all be terrorist activities....
West Bank- Palestinian aid groups have refused to accept money from the U.S. government because of a requirement they sign a pledge the money would not be used for terrorism, organizers said Monday.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has given Palestinian groups $1.3 billion in the past decade and is a key source of funding for the cash-strapped organizations.
But USAID enacted the anti-terrorism pledge requirement at the end of 2002 for new grants given worldwide. Specifically, USAID demanded that groups worldwide sign a document pledging not to "provide material support or resources to any individual or entity that advocates, plans, sponsors, engages in or has engaged in terrorist activity."
The Non-Governmental Organization Network, an umbrella group that includes 89 Palestinian aid groups, is leading the effort against signing the document.
Many Palestinian aid groups have refused to sign, arguing it allows the United States to determine what is a terrorist organization. They also fear that they might unwittingly fund projects of some of the 25 groups that the USAID identifies as terrorists like Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
"Identifying most of the Palestinian factions as terrorist groups is unacceptable," said Siam Rashid of the NGO network. "The other issue is that any activity could be identified as a terrorist activity."

First Issue of Al Qaeda military magazine hits the Innernut
From MEMRI: Recently, Al-Qa'ida published the first issue of its online magazine 'Al-Battar Training Camp - A Magazine Published by the Military Committee of the Mujahideen in the Arabian Peninsula' . . . The magazine focuses on military matters, and complements 'The Voice of Jihad,' the other online magazine published by Al-Qa'ida in Saudi Arabia, which focuses on ideology.
"The basic idea is to spread military culture among the youth with the aim of filling the vacuum that the enemies of the religion have been seeking to expand for a long time. Allah willing, the magazine will be simple and easy, and in it, my Muslim brother, you will find basic lessons in the framework of a military training program, beginning with programs for sports training, through types of light weapons and guerilla group actions in the cities and mountains, and [including] important points in security and intelligence, so that you will be able ... to fulfill the religious obligation that Allah has set upon you..."And so on. Indeed.
"The goal is to remove the oppression and the aggression and to fight for the sake of Allah in order to impose Shari'a law and so that the word of Allah will reign supreme. Examples of this type of fighting are [in] the land of the two holy places, Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya, Kashmir, the Philippines, and so on."
